What's Actually Open in Big Sky Before the Lifts Turn

Big Sky's off-season closures come in short, staggered windows. Visit Big Sky's 2026 Fall Dining Guide, dated October 13, shows many kitchens closing for a week or two and then reopening. The dates are spread across late October and November, so the list of what's dark changes nearly every Monday until Big Sky Resort opens on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

So the useful question this time of year is which week you're in. Here's the calendar from now through the end of November.

The Closures Come in Short Windows

A few places close for the whole stretch. Big Sky Noodles is closed Sept. 27 through Dec. 2. Michaelangelo's Ristorante is closed through Dec. 9, and Olive B's is closed Oct. 16 through Dec. 7. Alberto's closed on Oct. 24 and stays closed through Dec. 4. Resort venues like Cabin Bar & Grill, Scissor Bills and Yeti Dogs are closed through Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Most of the other closures are short and don't overlap much. Laid out week by week, they look like this:

Week Closed that week What changes
Oct. 26 to Nov. 1 Ousel and Spur through Nov. 1; The Wrap Shack since Oct. 23 Hero Snow Coffee moves to Tuesday through Friday starting Oct. 26; Gourmet Gals' fall hours end Oct. 30
Nov. 2 to 8 Cowboy Coffee Nov. 1 to 7; Hero Snow Coffee Nov. 2 to 8; The Waypoint Nov. 3 to 10 Ousel and Spur reopens after Nov. 1
Nov. 9 to 22 Unravel Coffee at Gravity Haus Nov. 9 to 23 The Waypoint is back after Nov. 10; The Wrap Shack's closure runs to "mid-November"
Nov. 23 to 30 Hero Snow Coffee Nov. 23 to 30 Resort dining reopens with the mountain on Nov. 25; Scoops' closure ends after Nov. 27

The weeks that hit coffee drinkers hardest are the first two in November. Cowboy Coffee and Hero Snow are both out at the start of that stretch, and Unravel's two-week break starts right after they come back.

Town Center Keeps Steady Hours

The guide lists a solid group of Town Center businesses with regular daily or near-daily hours and no closure dates:

  • Blue Moon Bakery, every day 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Beehive Basin Brewery, every day noon to 10 p.m.

Over in Meadow Village Center, Country Market is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Lone Perk Coffee House is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mi Pueblito Taco Bus, parked in the lot by ACE Hardware, serves weekdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with shorter weekend hours.

Gallatin Canyon has its own steady options. Cafe 191 opens every day from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Riverhouse BBQ serves every day from 3 to 9 p.m., and Wild Caddis at Rainbow Ranch every day from 4 to 9 p.m. Corral Steakhouse runs Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Bucks is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. McGill's Restaurant & Saloon at 320 Ranch has closed for the winter season.

Up the mountain, most of the open kitchens belong to the hotels, since the resort itself stays closed until Nov. 25. At Montage Big Sky, Alpenglow is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Beartooth Pub & Rec serves food from 4 to 10 p.m. with bowling from noon to 10 p.m. Backcast is open Wednesday through Sunday. At One&Only Moonlight Basin, Wildwood serves three meals a day, Dear Josephine serves dinner daily, and Akira Back is open Tuesday through Saturday. Horn and Cantle also lists breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Halloween Weekend Is the Busiest Stretch

The busiest weekend of the off-season comes at the end of the first closure week. The 10th annual Haunted Peaks Festival runs Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, and almost all of it happens in and around Town Center.

  1. Friday, Oct. 30. The festival opens with BSCO's Costume Climb on the climbing wall at BASE, which starts right after school. Climbers who reach the top get prizes and candy. MorningStar Learning Center's Community Trunk or Treat runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Lone Peak Drive, and the top three decorated trunks win prizes. That night, the Arts Council of Big Sky hosts its fifth annual Skull & Roses Ball at Tips Up. Cosmic Possum, a Grateful Dead-leaning band from Park City, plays. Doors open at 8 p.m. and music starts at 9. The event is 21 and over, and tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
  2. Saturday, Oct. 31. Moving Mountains hosts the Haunted Run 5K at noon to benefit MorningStar Learning Center. The paved course winds through Grey Drake and Town Center, and registration is $30, which includes a drink at Beehive Basin Brewery. Awards and the costume contest follow at 1 p.m. at the brewery. The Kids Fun Run and Costume Parade, for ages 12 and under, starts at 1:45 p.m. and finishes at the Visit Big Sky building. From 2 to 8 p.m., Visit Big Sky runs an Old West haunted house at the Big Sky Visitor Center. Admission is $5, children 6 and under get in free, and proceeds go to Discovery Academy.
  3. Sunday, Nov. 1. Big Sky Center for the Arts hosts a Día de Muertos celebration from noon to 7 p.m. The community ofrenda opens at noon, storytelling runs from 2 to 4 p.m., and the Parade of Catrinas follows a 4 p.m. performance. DJ QueenE plays the fiesta from 5 to 7 p.m. Guests are invited to bring a photo, a favorite food or flowers for the altar.

The Waypoint is still open that week. Its 2026 Horror Film Fest shows The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9:30 p.m. and An American Werewolf in London on Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. Ousel and Spur is the dinner spot that misses the weekend, since it doesn't reopen until after Nov. 1.

Early November Is the Thinnest Stretch

After Halloween, Big Sky hits its quietest run. Three spots close in the same week: Cowboy Coffee, Hero Snow and The Waypoint. The events thin out too, and most are one-night shows.

Big Sky Community Theatre performs Doublewide, Texas at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center on Nov. 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. BSCO's Veterans Day Breakfast runs at BASE on Nov. 11 from 8 to 10 a.m. Guitarist Luca Stricagnoli plays the PAC on Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.

The biggest gear event of the month is in Bozeman. As Explore Big Sky reported, Bridger Ski Foundation's 58th annual ski swap runs Nov. 7 and 8 at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, with more than 10,000 new and used winter sports items. Sellers drop off gear on Nov. 6.

There's also something new for mud season. Explore Big Sky reported that First Tracks Tires at 167-G Iron Loop Road added a public hand-wash service on Aug. 3, which gave Big Sky its first car wash. The paper said the system recycles about 70% of its water.

What Comes Back on Nov. 25, and Later

Opening day brings back the resort's own kitchens, including Cabin Bar & Grill, Scissor Bills and Yeti Dogs. The season runs daily through April 11, 2027.

There are no new lifts this year. The changes come from last season's projects. According to the resort's Winter 2026-27 press center, this will be the first full winter for the Explorer Gondola, which connects Mountain Village directly to the Lone Peak Tram, and for Kircliff, the observatory at the 11,166-foot summit. Both opened on Dec. 20, 2025. Iglu Big Sky, the snow-and-ice bar in the Bowl, comes back bigger, and a new staircase from the top of the Explorer Gondola means you can walk to it.

In Town Center and Meadow Village, the long closures end in December, a week or more after the lifts start. Big Sky Noodles is closed through Dec. 2, Alberto's through Dec. 4, Olive B's through Dec. 7 and Michaelangelo's through Dec. 9. The Montana Dinner at Meadow Yurt reopens in mid-December. M by The Alinea Group, Chef Grant Achatz's tasting-menu restaurant, starts its second winter on Dec. 10 and runs through April 3, 2027.

Hours change quickly this time of year. Visit Big Sky asks businesses to report any errors in their listings and takes calls at (406) 995-3000, so it's worth a quick call before you drive over.

If the quiet weeks before opening day have you wondering what your Big Sky place might be worth going into ski season, the team at Small Dog Realty will put together a home valuation, and we're happy to swap off-season dinner tips while we're at it.
